The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is the regional intergovernmental organization and geopolitical union of states in South Asia. Its member states are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The SAARC region comprises of over 21% of the world’s population which remains exposed towards COVID-19.
This report intends to find out the mortality rates and recovery rates caused by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic at the SAARC region as on 01 May 2020.
Findings:
- The SAARC Member States have reported 64,243 positive cases, a total of 1,800 deaths in the region, and 14,049 recovered cases as on 01 May 2020.
- COVID-19 Mortality Rates of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, are 2.95%, 2.06%, 0.00%, 3.26%, 0.21%, 0.00%, 2.36%, and 1.01%, respectively on 01 May 2020.
- The SAARC Average COVID-19 Mortality Rate is 2.80 on the date.
- COVID-19 Recovery Rates of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, are 11.98%, 2.11%, 71.43%, 25.63%, 3.58%, 27.12%, 25.24%, and 23.48%, respectively on 01 May 2020.
- The SAARC Average Recovery Rate is 21.87 on the date.
It is seen that India’s COVID-19 Mortality is 3.26% on 01 May 2020 which is higher than the SAARC Average of 2.76% (Figure-1).
It has been observed that Bhutan tops at the COVID-19 Recovery Rate in the SAARC region, taking it to 71.43% on 01 May 2020 (Figure-2).
