Director General (DG) of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun today (15 July 2020) said RAB would provide all necessary supports to those who were deceived and cheated by the Regent Group Chairman Mohammad Shahed Karim, the prime accused over issuing fake COVID-19 test report scam.

“We are giving legal supports to the victims who are coming to us . . . RAB is helping people on how to go to the police station to get justice,” the RAB DG told a press briefing at its headquarters following the arrest of Shahed from Satkhira frontier area.

He said after getting information about the possible hideout of Shahed from Regent Group Managing Director (MD), RAB arrested him from Kapasia in Gazipur early today.

Chowdhury Mamun said, “Shahed used to introduce himself as a retired army officer or high official on many occasions. But he was a fraud and dishonest person. He has earned a lot of money through MLM business.”

He continued: “We came to know that around 50 cases were filed at different police stations across the country against him. We are working on it.”

The DG said Shahed went to different areas, including Cox’s Bazar, Dhaka, Cumilla and Satkhira in the last nine days to avoid arrest and members of law enforcement agencies were behind him to follow and he sometimes travelled in his own car or a rented car or riding on a truck or walking on foot.

“RAB arrested Shahed with a firearm and some bullets from the bank of Labangaboti river frontier at Komorpur Village under Debhata Upazila of Satkhira at about 5 am,” he said, adding, later he was flown to Dhaka by a helicopter.

He said a total of 11 out of 17 suspects were arrested in connection with the case filed by RAB with Uttara West Police Station on charge of COVID-19 (coronavirus) certificate forgery.

Shahed was handed over to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). The Detective Branch (DB) of police has been investigating the case which was filed at Uttara West Police Station on July 7 in connection with issuing fake coronavirus certificates from Regent Hospital.

Senior officials of RAB were also present during the briefing.
